Before buying a pre-owned Chanel handbag, request a useful set of condition photos, ask about repairs and alterations, and ask what evidence supports the seller's authentication assessment. Keep those questions separate. A bag can look attractive in a front photograph while leaving its interior, construction and repair history unexplained.
Start with the whole bag, then request the missing views

It does not establish the material composition, date of manufacture, repair history or authenticity of the bag. Check the live listing for current availability.
For a viewing or a remote inquiry, ask for:
- A straight-on front view and a photograph of the back.
- The base and all four corners in clear light.
- The interior, lining, pockets and underside of the flap.
- Close views of the closure, chain and strap attachment points.
- Another angle of any mark that is difficult to interpret.
Use those views to make a question list. For example, ask whether an apparent dark patch is a shadow, a stain or an area of wear. Keep the lighting and camera angle reasonably consistent when comparing photographs.
Ask about condition and repairs in plain words
Ask whether the exterior has been recolored, the lining repaired, or hardware or straps replaced. If work was done, request the date, the provider and any available invoice. Ask what was changed rather than treating the word “restored” as a complete description.
At an in-person viewing, check how the closure operates and whether the strap arrangement and dimensions work for you. These are practical buying checks, not a substitute for authentication. If a detail remains unclear, request an explanation before deciding to buy.
Ask what the authentication assessment actually covers
Ask who assessed the bag, what method they used and whether there is a written result that refers to this particular item. A general statement about the shop's process does not answer every question about an individual listing.
CHANEL's anti-counterfeit guidance directs buyers to its authorized sales channels and explains that it does not publish a complete public guide to identifying genuine products. A logo comparison or a number visible in a photograph should not be treated as a complete authentication process. Keep item identifiers and personal purchase documents private when asking questions online.
Plan for care before choosing a bag
Ask for the material and finish to be identified before applying a cleaner. CHANEL's handbag care instructions recommend avoiding overfilling, prolonged light and moisture exposure, and contact that can transfer color. Its storage advice includes keeping the bag upright in its pouch and protecting the straps or chains with tissue.
For an existing stain or repair question, CHANEL's Care & Services guidance points owners toward its boutique or client-care team. It also cautions that cleaning products can damage hardware or alter leather finishes. Avoid experimenting on an unfamiliar finish merely to improve its appearance for a photograph.
